Shortly after the release of Armchair Apocrypha, Andrew Bird and his band (including electronic artist and percussionist Martin Dosh) made their way into our studios for a live performance on the Afternoon Sound Alternative. Stephen Whitehead spoke with Andrew about his songwriting style, inspiration, and extraordinary whistling talent. The set ended with a rare tune, Dear Dirty, from his Fingerlings 3 release.
You can listen to an archive of a live performance from Thao & The Get Down Stay Down. Thao & The Get Down Stay Down came by the KGNU studios during the Afternoon Sound Alternative to play a few songs from their release 'We The Common' and chat with host Erin Roberts. In addition to a number of amazing performances, Thao talks about how she's adapted to being a touring musician.
Following the release of 2011's Tassili album, Tinariwen were in the midst of a North American tour when they made their way into our studios for a live radio session. The language barrier made it difficult for us to conduct an interview with them, but they shared three songs with us live on the airwaves and we all understood the message. Tinariwen is a band of Tuareg musicians from the Sahara Desert region of northern Mali.
Explore the archives with this stunning studio session from Matmos. We were thrilled to have a visit from M. C. Schmidt and Drew Daniel in advance of a Communikey show at the Boulder Theater. After a brief interview and a quick highlight reel of their discography, we turned the airwaves over to them. What happened next was an hour of remarkable radio. Enjoy.
Enjoy an archive of a live performance from The Wood Brothers. The trio stopped by the KGNU studios during the Afternoon Sound Alternative to play a few songs from their release 'The Muse' and chat with host Barry Gilbert before their shows at The Fox and The Gothic. In addition to playing some beautiful music, the talk about their Boulder roots and Chris Wood's overlapping with Medeski Martin & Wood.
Digging through the archives we found this gem from DJ Logic. Back in 2008, we caught up with Jason Kibler, aka DJ Logic, before a show at the Fox and invited him to take over the airwaves. He made his way into the studios with a stack of records under each arm, settled in, warmed up on the turntables, and then went live with this massive set.
DJ Olive was the headliner at our 2009 Fundraising concert called Signal Strength. Before the event he stopped by the studios for a live set and interview. DJ Olive is an incredible selector and producer with a unique and abstract approach to dance music. His live sets are remarkable and at the Signal Strength fundraiser the room was electric as his set unfolded. Enjoy an archive of the afternoon broadcast.
Local Gold: Check out a recent in-studio performance from Paper Bird. It's always wonderful to have Paper Bird stop by our studios. Over the years we've had the pleasure of watching the band evolve musically. Along the way they've taken time to set-up shop in KGNU's live performance studio to share their latest songs. This particular performance showcased music from their latest album "Rooms" just before a Red Rocks performance.
Local Gold: Listen to an in-studio performance from Ark Life. Ark Life is an incredible band that formed when a trip through Denver on route to New York turned into a very extended stay. Lodged in Denver and unable to move, the land-locked Ark is staying put gathering some of Denver's best musicians and bringing them on board.
Local Gold: On a very hot Friday the 13th in June, the Denver-based group Men In Burka stopped by our Denver studios to perform a couple of tunes and share an unreleased track with us.
