Other Sounds is an occasional overview of overlooked or unclassifiable new recordings. We strive to highlight the steady stream of releases that fail to fit easily into the mainstream hype machine. In this edition we highlight new recordings from GOAT, field recordings from India, Les Ambassadeurs, Max Richter, Daniel Bachman, and Brian Eno's collaboration with Karl Hyde.
Local Gold: We had a chance to visit with Elephant Revival just before their two night stand at the Boulder Theater as part of their "Birds of a Feather Autumnal Ball" with Paper Bird and Horse Feathers. The band played a few tunes and spoke about the development of new material as well as the challenges of performing in a fuselage.
Over the years we have been very fortunate to have visits to our studio from Antibalas. This incredible band has consistently taken time out of their busy tour schedule to play a few tunes on our airwaves. As usual, our performance space was packed tighter than a NYC subway but the unstoppable power of Antibalas can never be contained and this session proved that fact once again.
Local Gold: The wonderful band Clouds and Mountains made their way into our studios for their first ever live radio session. I suppose you could call this the worldwide radio debut of the new songs from their forthcoming release, possibly called Ultrasound. We spoke with the members of the band about their songwriting process and the musical manifestation of their friendship.
Andrea DeMarcus and Dave Kirslis are the talented team behind Georgia’s Cicada Rhythm. The skilled guitar and bass duo produce a modernized folk sound glistening with sweet strings and haunting vocal harmonies.
In an attempt to understand the incomprehensible legacy of Jimi Hendrix, we dig into the stacks to present a small look at Jimi's recorded output. His unparalleled and groundbreaking solo recordings took place over just three years. Excerpts from 'Jimi Hendrix: Rock and Roll Roman Candle' a radio special originally broadcast on October 10th, 2013.
Local Gold: We've been lucky enough to have several visits from Danielle Ate The Sandwich over the years. She's performed live during one of our live broadcasts from the early days of the Underground Music Showcase and has stopped by our performance studio on a number of other occasions. On her most recent visit she shared a few tunes, including an unreleased song that she wrote for the new documentary of Edith Lake Wilkinson called Packed in a Trunk: The Lost Art of Edith Lake Wilkinson.
Local Gold: Eighteen members of the Itchy-O collective performed live at our studios. We've had visits from Itchy-O in the past but never had we attempted to capture one of their live performances. At long last, here is the evidence from that session. Members of the group spoke with Nat about their upcoming Gothic Theater performance.
KGNU's DJ Deep Rawk Dave hosts a special episode of Eclipse, focusing on "Life, Death, and Art in the Streets of Denver." 7-8pm is a tribute to the life of Anthony 'Ant One' Martinez with his bandmates Jher 451 and DJ Jester from the group Unseenonymus, MC legend PAAS, and Adrienna of Sisters of Color in a dialogue about suicide and mental health. Many Unseenonymus tracks are debuted.
