Biography: Cary has been involved with KGNU since before there was a KGNU, as part of the Community Free School class “Let’s Start a Community Radio Station” in the late ‘70s. In the late ‘70s/early ‘80s he served as the station’s music director and hosted the Monday Morning Sound Alternative and Friday Afternoon Sound Alternative. He also hosted a jazz show and the station’s first blues show, “Blues After Hours,” which eventually became “Blues Legacy.” Cary originated the KGNU “Grateful Dead Marathon” and commissioned the first of a series of cool posters for it from artist Bruce Campbell. He also started the station’s Radio Training Class and served briefly as interim station manager.
In 1985 he got a paying gig with KBCO as host of “Blues from the Red Rooster Lounge” and then syndicated the show to a number of college and pubic stations. (Both these shows are still on the air today.) In 1987 he received the “Keepin’ the Blues Alive” award from the Blues Foundation in Memphis and was given a “Best of Boulder” award from the Daily Camera that same year. In early 1990 he founded Blues Access magazine and served as editor and publisher for the next 12 years, for which he was bestowed another “Keepin’ the Blues Alive” award.
Cary and his wife, Nancy, have lived in Boulder since 1973. These days he is semi-retired and attends to his hobbies of bicycling a few thousand miles a year, photography and travel. His photographs have won numerous awards, including a first place in the “Landscape and Architecture” category at the Louisville Art Association National Juried Photography Exhibition in 2011. In 2010 he had a solo exhibition of 26 of his digital prints at the Gondolier Restaurant in Boulder.
In 2000 he compiled the 6-CD set “Rooster Music: The First 2000 Years”
Since 1997 Cary has taught courses on blues and radio production at Common Ground on the Hill, a “not your average” summer music and arts program in Westminster, Maryland, where he also serves as the emcee for a rollicking annual live “Blues Night."
