The video above is from our pals at Audiovore. Back in August of 2013, AfterFM co-presented this installment of their Fortunate Listener series, recorded live at The Mercury Cafe.
The wonderful band Clouds and Mountains made their way into our studios for their first ever live radio session. I suppose you could call this the worldwide radio debut of the new songs from their forthcoming release, possibly called Ultrasound. We spoke with the members of the band about their songwriting process and the musical manifestation of their friendship. Hosted by John Schaefer. (Archive from 5/1/14)
Set List: Cruel Universe, Little Bear, No Softer Sound (Bucket of Bees), Here Again, Gone Shot Silent
Local Gold: We had a chance to visit with Elephant Revival just before their two night stand at the Boulder Theater as part of their "Birds of a Feather Autumnal Ball" with Paper Bird and Horse Feathers. The band played a few tunes and spoke about the development of new material as well as the challenges of performing in a fuselage.
Shortly after the release of Armchair Apocrypha, Andrew Bird and his band (including electronic artist and percussionist Martin Dosh) made their way into our studios for a live performance on the Afternoon Sound Alternative. Stephen Whitehead spoke with Andrew about his songwriting style, inspiration, and extraordinary whistling talent. The set ended with a rare tune, Dear Dirty, from his Fingerlings 3 release.
Local Gold: Patrick Dethlefs & Eye and the Arrow stopped by for a live studio session on the Morning Sound Alternative with 99. When Patrick won studio time for $10 at a silent auction he asked Eye and the Arrow if they would be his band for the recording session. They had a different idea, "How about we give you $5 and we do a split EP?" - they still owe Patrick $5 but the resulting EP was the first showcase of a magical musical collaboration.
